Privacy Policy

Last updated: 21 May 2026

This policy describes how DietTribe.nz ("DietTribe", "we", "us") collects, holds, uses, and discloses personal information. It applies to information collected through this website and the DietTribe mobile app (iOS and Android).

We are committed to complying with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 and the Privacy Principles contained in it.

What personal information we collect

When you submit a new listing or evidence through our submission form, we collect:

  • Your email address

We do not collect your name, phone number, physical address, or any other identifying information unless you choose to include it in the content of a submission.

We do not use cookies for tracking or advertising. Basic access logs (IP address, page requested, timestamp) are retained by our infrastructure provider (Amazon Web Services) for operational purposes and are not used to identify individual users.

Mobile app data

The DietTribe mobile app stores and uses data as follows. No mobile app data is used for advertising or shared with third parties for commercial purposes.

  • Dietary preferences: Your dietary profile (coeliac, gluten intolerant, lactose intolerant) is stored only on your device using local storage. This information is never transmitted to DietTribe's servers or included in any request we log.
  • Location: If you use the "Nearby" feature, the app accesses your device's approximate location to find venues close to you. Your location is sent to our API solely to perform that search and is not stored, logged against your identity, or retained after the request completes. Location access requires your explicit permission and can be revoked at any time in your device settings.
  • Push notification token: If you enable push notifications, a device-specific token is stored on our servers to deliver notifications to your device. This token is not linked to any personally identifiable information. You can opt out at any time by disabling notifications in your device settings or uninstalling the app, which will cause the token to expire.
  • Search queries: Search terms you enter are sent to our API to return results. We do not log search queries against your device or identity.

All data stored locally on your device is cleared when you uninstall the app.

Why we collect it

We collect your email address for two purposes:

  • Verification: to confirm that a real person submitted the listing or evidence and to reduce automated or abusive submissions.
  • Follow-up: so our moderation team can contact you if we have questions about your submission or need additional information to assess it.

How we store it

Submission contact information (your email address) is stored in a database hosted on Amazon Web Services infrastructure in the Asia Pacific (Sydney) region. It is held in a separate table from all publicly accessible listing data — your email address is never included in public-facing API responses or listing pages.

We apply appropriate technical safeguards including encryption in transit (TLS) and access controls restricting who can read submission contact records.

How long we keep it

We retain your submission contact information until the submission is resolved (approved, rejected, or closed), and delete it within 12 months of resolution. If a submission remains unresolved, we will review and delete contact records no later than 24 months after submission.

Who we share it with

We do not share your personal information with third parties, except where required by law or where necessary to operate our services (for example, our hosting provider, Amazon Web Services, which processes data on our behalf under appropriate data processing agreements).

We do not sell personal information. We do not use it for advertising.

Product photos and Open Food Facts

When you submit photos of a product — such as a photo of the front of pack, ingredient list, or nutrition panel — those photos may be contributed to Open Food Facts, an open, collaborative food product database. This contribution is made to assist in assessing the product's ingredient list and nutritional information, and to give back to the open dataset that DietTribe draws upon.

Photos are contributed under DietTribe's Open Food Facts account, not under your name. They are released under the Open Database Contents Licence (DbCL), consistent with Open Food Facts' terms. Photos of product packaging do not constitute personal information.

Contribution only occurs after a moderator has reviewed your submission. You may request that a photo not be contributed to Open Food Facts by noting this in your submission or contacting us at privacy@diettribe.nz. For information on how Open Food Facts handles data, see their privacy policy.

Your rights

Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to:

  • Ask whether we hold personal information about you
  • Request access to that information
  • Request correction of inaccurate information

To exercise these rights, or if you have any privacy concerns, contact us at: privacy@diettribe.nz

We will respond to your request within 20 working days, as required by the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner .
