Gluten free pasta in NZ

There's more genuinely good gluten-free pasta in NZ than ever — rice, corn, quinoa, buckwheat, and legume-based options are all in supermarkets now. The traps are at the edges: instant noodles, soba blends, fresh gnocchi, and the sauce jar. Here's every coeliac-compatible pasta in our database.

Where gluten hides in the pasta aisle

  • Instant noodles. Almost all wheat — and even rice-based ones often carry wheat in the seasoning sachet (soy sauce powder, hydrolysed wheat protein).
  • Soba noodles. Buckwheat itself is gluten free, but most soba is a buckwheat-wheat blend. Only 100% buckwheat soba labelled gluten free is safe.
  • Fresh pasta and gnocchi. Fresh chilled pasta is nearly always wheat, and most gnocchi is potato plus wheat flour — check for a dedicated GF version.
  • Pasta sauces. Some use wheat flour as a thickener, and cheese or cream sauces are the usual suspects. Scan the allergen statement for wheat.
  • Shared cooking water. At home or when eating out, gluten-free pasta cooked in the same water as regular pasta is no longer gluten free.

What "gluten free" means on the packet here

Under the FSANZ Food Standards Code, a gluten-free claim in New Zealand and Australia means no detectable gluten — stricter than the 20 ppm threshold used in Europe and the US. A packet labelled gluten free on an NZ shelf meets that standard regardless of where it was made.

Frequently asked questions

What is gluten-free pasta made from?

The most common bases are rice, maize (corn), quinoa, buckwheat, and legumes like chickpeas or lentils — often in blends. Each has a different texture: corn-rice blends are closest to regular pasta, legume pastas are firmer and higher in protein.

Is soba (buckwheat) noodle gluten free?

Often not. Despite the name, buckwheat is naturally gluten free — but most soba noodles are made from a blend of buckwheat and wheat flour. Only 100% buckwheat soba (juwari soba) labelled gluten free is safe for coeliacs.

Are rice noodles gluten free?

Plain rice noodles usually are — but check the label. Some brands blend in wheat starch, and flavoured instant varieties commonly include wheat-based seasonings or soy sauce.

Can I cook gluten-free pasta in the same water as regular pasta?

No. Pasta water carries gluten. For coeliac disease, use a separate pot, separate water, and a separate colander — cross-contact from shared cooking water is enough to cause a reaction.
