Are bananas low FODMAP?
Why the same fruit gives two different answers
An unripe banana is mostly resistant starch, which is not a FODMAP. As it ripens, that starch converts into sugars — and part of that conversion produces fructans, which are FODMAPs. So the banana becomes sweeter and higher FODMAP on the same curve.
This is genuinely unusual. Most foods have one FODMAP status and keep it. Bananas are the food most likely to produce a confusing personal history: tolerated one week, a problem the next, with nothing changed except how long the fruit sat on the bench.
What this means in practice
- Buy them firm and eat them early. Still slightly green at the tip is the safest point.
- Refrigerate to hold them there. The skin will blacken, which looks alarming but slows ripening of the flesh.
- Freeze the ones you can't get to. Freezing stops ripening — but freeze them while still firm, because freezing a ripe banana preserves it as a ripe banana.
- Treat sweetness as the signal. If it tastes noticeably sweet and sticky, the fructans have developed.
Where ripe banana turns up
Recipes calling for banana almost always specify ripe fruit, because that is what gives sweetness and texture:
- Banana bread and muffins — the riper the better, from a baking point of view
- Smoothies, especially pre-made or cafe-blended
- Banana-flavoured yoghurt, cereal and snack bars
- Dried banana and banana chips
So "I can eat a banana" does not reliably transfer to banana products — those are made with exactly the ripeness you would otherwise avoid.
Other reliable low FODMAP fruit

As a rule of thumb, firm and still slightly green at the tip is low FODMAP; fully yellow and soft, or spotted with brown, is where fructans climb. There is no exact cut-off — ripening is gradual, so treat it as a spectrum rather than a switch.
